Water Conservation methods

Here are some easy ways to start conserving water, provided courtesy of Mayor Johnson:

Basic Tips on Conserving Water

1. Especially during summer months or a request for voluntary conservation, do not water lawns or use broadcast sprinklers, whether you have in-ground systems or use portable sprinklers. Only use watering cans, hand sprinklers or drip systems/soaker hoses to water gardens.

2. When you do water even with watering cans, hand sprinklers or drip systems, water in the early morning or in the evening so that the water is not lost to evaporation in the heat of day.

3. Do not plant garden plants that require watering – native plants usually withstand drought without watering.

4. Make sure pools have a solar cover or other cover to eliminate evaporation.

5. Water should not be allowed to run while washing cars, brushing teeth or washing dishes.

6. Use the dishwasher only when its full, and only run clothes washers with a full load (or be sure to use the lowest setting you can for the wash load, if the setting is adjustable).

7. Recycle water from freshwater aquariums, air conditioners and the like.

8. Fix leaks and correct known drips in the system. To avoid leaks, turn off the water to basement bathroom toilets that are not in general use. These are a major source of unknown leaks. Just be sure to watch for evaporation to keep water in traps and avoid sewer gases. Putting vegetable oil in the bowl will help avoid any problem.

9. Limit showers to 5 minutes or less.

10. Install water saving faucet aerators in the kitchen and bathroom, and use low-flow shower heads.

11. When replacing appliances, purchase water saving appliances such as front loading clothes washers, which can save 50% or more on water use.

12. Install water saving item such as flow diverters and “tank banks” in toilets to save a gallon or more for each flush.

Other great ways

Catch water from AC condensation (some people can get as much as 2 gallons per hour!), catch rinse water from washing machines, catch shower water in buckets.
