Water Conservation workshop

Saturday, July 21st - 10 a.m. til Noon in Town Hall

If you missed the workshop, you can still catch it on Carroll or Frederick Cable TV. Click here to find out information on showtimes and channels.

We had around 35 people come out to learn about effective water-saving techniques. Mayor Johnson gave out free toilet tank banks, diverter valves, low flow showerheads, faucet aerators, and shower timers. Dan Andrews from the Carroll County Environmental Advisory Council presented information on high-efficiency washing mashines and high-efficiency toilets, including the dual-flush models that are becoming widely used in Australia and Europe (they offer a 1.6 gallon flush for solids and also a .9 gallon flush for liquids). Josh and Tim demonstrated rain barrel construction and gave tips for installation and maintenance of the barrels before distributing 20 free fully constructed barrels to town residents that were paid for by the town. Half of the parts for the barrels were generously donated by Ace Hardware in Mount Airy. Thanks to the town for sponsoring the event, to Mayor Johnson for helping to organize, publicize, and execute the event, to Dan Andrews for his help consulting the town on water policy and providing a wealth of wonderful information at the workshop, and to everyone who came out to make our efforts for community-involved conservation education fruitful!

In equally good news, we are forming two bulk purchasing collectives as a result of the workshop - one for additional rain barrels and one for dual-flush toilets. If you would like to participate or learn more about either buying collective, click on this link and e-mail tim@greenmountairy.org.

The rain barrel collective has been formed and we have purchased 100 rain barrels. We do still have extra barrels available, so if you would like to buy one of the extras, email tim@greenmountairy.org. See this press release for info on the bulk purchase and distribution of rain barrels.

Press release

The Town of Mount Airy is sponsoring a workshop organized by the Citizens for a Green Mount Airy to educate citizens on water conservation. The workshop will focus on the many ways that town residents can save water – including the installation of inexpensive water saving devices, employing basic water conservation practices and re-using water by utilizing rain barrels and rain cubes.

Several water saving devices will be available to those attendees who live in the town without charge, including a limited number of low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators. A limited number of shower timers have also been ordered for distribution to attendees. In addition, the town expects to offer without charge a number of other easy to install items available that can save on household water usage, including displacement bags and diverter valves.

The water saving items that will be made available to attendees are intended for town residents only. Attendees receiving these items will be asked to give their name and address.

The town also plans to offer to the first 20 Mount Airy residents free rain barrels. Workshop organizers will provide instruction on how to construct and use them onsite.

In addition, Dan Andrews from the Carroll County Environmental Advisory Council will share his wealth of knowledge on cost-effective ways to save water and hopefully prevent our community from facing limits on the outside use of water, including high efficiency & dual-flush toilets, high efficiency appliances, rain box water catchments, efficient showerheads, kitchen aerators, and more. Be sure to come out for an educational and productive session that will help you and our town!

The workshop is scheduled to be televised on Carroll County Cable Channel 23 and will be rebroadcast during the rest of the summer.
